Kirkwall is still a city, the university just encompasses a lot of its real estate, economy, etc. Lowtown, Hightown, Darktown and the Docks are all still effectively urban areas.

The Gallows encompasses all dormitory style housing plus yes, the quad...quivalent at the center. Replete with giant slave statues. Thanks, Tevinter! The Gallows is still effectively on its own little island, so a ferry that runs every half hour (or hour, from midnight to 6 AM), transports students across the harbour to the docks

The ferries are never, ever punctual.

Actual classes/administrative functions/etc are centered in the buildings at the top of Hightown (i.e. the Keep and the Chantry, which share space with municipal and religious aspects of the city; we could probably break them down further into like arts, sciences, etc but let's consider this a working prototype) so uh, look forward to your calves being able to crack walnuts, students. Hightown includes a lot of important historical housing which is now mostly occupied by fraternities and sororities, as well as exorbitantly scaled shopping and, of course, the mob slash merchant's guild. Additionally the merchant's guild owns the Blooming Rose, the classiest strip joint in all the Free Marches.

Lowtown by and large remains Lowtown, dominated by the market where you can get anything and a handful of bars and clubs. The Hanged Man is of course the most popular amongst the student body, because why reinvent the wheel? LT is also where you'll find cheap off campus housing ostensibly still connected to the university, although it's far enough from actual campus that students are primarily left to their own devices as long as they don't actively set anything aflame. This also means it's not ...the safest area to live, buuuut that is both Kirkwall and any university town, sadly.

The clinic in Darktown operates essentially the way it did in game: Planned Parenthood type services, pay what/if you can, not ......precisely legal, etc. Other than that Darktown is uh. Still awful.

The campus bookstore is the Black Emporium, because let's be real, Kirkwall was specifically built to be confusing and inconvenient for its ...massive slave population, and remains that way today.
